IIC new office - Obama in town

Check out the door there folks. That's one of the doors in the Irish Immigration Center's (IIC) new space at 100 Franklin Street. 100 Franklin Street was the former location of the Boston Stock exchange and this door was used as part of the vault to store gold and the like. Cool wha?

The IIC moved in here in October but held it's open night in January. Here at the open night Lisa Marie gets her pic taken beside the 'Antrim' mail box, one of 32 mail boxes at IIC named after each county in Ireland.

Here are a couple of pics of Marguerite and Lisa Marie, then Marguerite and Jude, standing beside the IIC's logo. Folk from home will recognise it instantly as the statue of the lady at Queen's Bridge in Belfast. It's cool that this is the IIC logo and it certainly gives Jude a constant reminder of home.

And here is Jude sitting at his new desk in the new office.

President Obama was speaking at Northeastern University in Boston today and seeing as it is right beside Fenway then Jude and Marguerite decided they would go see him. Jude took this pic on the way across the park, cool wha?

Oh yeah, Obama, well he was in town to support the Democratic candidate Martha Coakley, who was trying to capture Ted Kennedy's old senate seat. This was a fascinating experience. Having watched this type of event (American election campaigning) on television news bulletins over the years it was great to be in the middle of all the banter, the cardboard posters, the flags, etc. Obama spoke in this hall to the left.

Martha's opponent was Scott Brown a republican. He won, and for the first time in millions of years the State of Massachusetts had a republican senator. Just what was Jude's brother Marty doing there? Check out the fella standing directly behind the doll in the pink coat, is that Marty? He never said he was going to Boston that weekend!!!

Oh yeah, Obama, he jumped out of one of those cars down thon road there and hi-tailed it into the building, but all we got to see was his car! Git!

Soon enough Marguerite and Jude thought 'sod this for a game of marbles, we're outta here'. The idea of hanging around waiting on Obama in the freezing cold was ditched.
Not to worry though as a booking had been made for the Liberty Hotel for a night. Sure why not? You gotta spoil yourself every now and again! Upon arrival at the Liberty a nice wee glass of champaigne was offered.... and accepted of course!

Here is a pic from the hotel room at the Liberty Hotel. This is kind of 'similar-but-not-exactly-the-same' to the view that Gabriel and the lads will get from their apartment when they arrive for Gabriel's stag doo in early April.

Later Marguerite and Jude took a wee dander taking in the Charlestown area of Boston (see Bunker Hill monument here to the left) where the U.S.S. Constitution ship is located. It is a fully commissioned working ship which is manned by a U.S. Navy crew. Sure as we were walking by we decided to take a wee tour. Below is Marguerite with Miles our tour guide.

Unfortunately Marguerite fell overboard and Jude had to chuck her the ring ding a ling thing. Check her out here with it stuck on her head

Jude on the ship with part of the Boston skyline behind.

The ship was nicknamed 'Old Ironsides' because it survived so many battles at sea.

This weekend ended with a wee trip to Sullivan's Tap where Marguerite unsuccessfully challenged Jude at pool. Here she is showing off her skills on the green baize.

Meanwhile Jude is at the auld trick shots again. Final score Marguerite 2 - Jude 5.
