The sign says, 'Welcome to Fenway Park'. It's opening week and today the famous New York Yankees are in town to play the Boston Red Sox.
It's 8.00 am on a Saturday morning and here comes Roberto De Matteo arriving at Gate E looking slightly frazzled from the night before. But hey, that's nothing a couple of cups of tea won't sort out. I say, get some tea in ye lad and ye'll be grand. Wha?
The first game of each year is always something to look forward to. With today's games starting at 1.00 pm Jude, Mark and Robert were there from 8.00 am. Sure what else would ye be doing on a Saturday morning at that time. Get yourself outta bed and get down to the Park!!!!
Mark is a new arrival in Boston. He is from County Clare and is this year's University of Limerick student working with Jude at the Irish International Immigrant Center (just like Robert did in 2009 and Frank did last year). Mark took to the Fenway Gate E experience like a duck to water. Here he is snapping away goodo.
Before you could say, Jude it's the Red Sox not Man Utd', the lads were in. Here they are grinning away like kids on Christmas morning as they have just entered the oldest Baseball Stadium in America.
This scene will look familiar to anyone who has ever watched 'Fever Pitch, the film starring Drew Barrymore and Jimmy Fallon. 'What, you havn't seen it yet?' Go rent it out!!!!
Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Try saying that when you've had 7 or 8 swallies!!!!
Mark and Robert look like two 70's policemen with thon cop style sunglasses on. Mark's pair score extra naff points for having mirrors on them!!! Wha?
Rather than tear down the old park and rebuild anew and rename it after some airline, mobile phone or bank, (as is the modern way) the owners of the Red Sox (who also happen to now own Liverpool FC) decided to keep the old place intact but to add to/repair it each off-season. So additions such as the new screens are great.
Hey, meet some of the players. Here's New York captain Derek Jeter.............
.......here's New York's Alex 'A-Rod' Rodriguez.....
.......and here's Boston's David 'Big Papi' Ortiz.
'I don't care if I look stupid eating my popcorn with my gloves on.....my hands are cold alright', says Jude.
Ok, so Jude had a few beers last night too, but that doesn't mean to say he should go hiding his face behind a big pair of oversized dopey looking sunglasses like Roberto De Matteo is doing here. As they say in Belfast - 'Wise up naiy'.
'Ye can't win them all, but it sure would be nice to win the odd one like'. Unfortunately today the Red Sox continue their dodgy start to the season and get stuffed 9-4. Like I said, 'Ye can't win......
At least the lads had a great view from their seats as this pic shows.
Mark has really enjoyed himself at his first baseball game and he gives his thumbs up here. Meanwhile Robert is mumbling, 'Ok, where's that pub you were on about?'
Baseball is hard to explain. You see it's not all about winning. Of course winning is great, but as a spectator it's about being there, taking part, singing along, having a beer, eating a hotdog, interracting with the crowd. It's just American culture at it's best!!!
Springtime brings a nice buzz to the city of Boston. You can virtually set your calender for it arriving in the first week of April. It's mainly due to the return of the good weather, but also it's the return of the outdoor games and activities. These two things combined seem to change everything each April. It's magic!
Here the crowds make their way home after the game.
After the game Jude and Robert made their way to see KT Tunstall at the Paradise Rock Club.
'When clapping yer hands at the end of a song, ye sure need someplace to set yer swally like'. So luckily Jude and Robert are well prepared tonight with their Rock n Roll jeans on!!! Wha?
Yep, Jude went to see KT in November 2010, but hey she's so good you could literally see her every week.
